The Best Fitness Apps

There are several fantastic fitness apps for your phone or tablet that can make your fitness journey (or that of your athletes) better. Over the past few years, I’ve used the following apps and highly recommend each of them.

Important note: I’m a Mac user and haven’t verified these for their work with Android phones.

The Best Fitness Apps

On Form

OnForm is a fantastic application for analyzing any athletic movement. I use this app for analysis of a lifter’s technique or for gait analyses in the runners that I treat. This app allows you to record voiceovers, draw joint angles, analyze in slow motion, and more.

Iron Path or Keelo

Tracking the bar path during various lifts can provide some excellent information on a lifter’s technique. So, these two apps for fitness are great. I prefer Iron Path as it allows me to upload videos into the app and then track joint angles. But, Keelo videos must be recorded in the app. This is a bit more complicated but it has the cool feature of changing the color of the bar path tracker to show the acceleration of the bar.

SmartWod Timer

I can’t tell you how many different workout timers I’ve tried. For such a simple concept I’ve been surprised at the price some charge or their lack of functionality. My favorite, the SmartWod Timer. They also have a great WodGenerator that allows you to select what equipment you have and get suggested CrossFit-style workouts.

Whoop or HRV4Training

I’ve previously written about Heart Rate Variability and how useful this can be for tracking recovery and health. So, these two fitness apps are my most recommended for tracking HRV. Whoop is the best on the market, measuring 100 data points per second but is more expensive than the low cost of HRV4Training.

MetricMe

Tracking your current stats is necessary to continually ensuring you are positively progressing in your fitness journey. Many apps do this, but I find they are overly complicated. As a CrossFitter needing to track a lot of variables, I’ve discovered MetricMe to be great.

Renaissance Periodization App

If you want to dive deeper into meal prep, macro counting, eating reminders, automated shopping lists, and more, the Renaissance Periodization app is on the next level. Use code “Pamela10” to save!

Instagram / Facebook

The amount of fantastic information shared between these two apps by fitness professionals is unreal. Tons of knowledge are available 24/7 to help you be a better athlete or coach.

Headspace

Caring for your mental health is just as important as your physical health. Headspace is my most commonly recommended app for helping individuals reset mentally and relax. I’ve seen great help in my heart rate variability by working in this area.

Essential Anatomy

Understanding anatomy goes a long way towards helping athletes make better training decisions. The essential anatomy app is an excellent tool for quickly pulling up muscle, joint, and bone anatomy when needed.

My Fitness Pal

As the saying goes, “abs are made in the kitchen, not the gym.” If you want to maximize your fitness, you’ve got to be working on your nutrition. My Fitness Pal is a great fitness app for tracking your caloric intake.
